This hand-carved linocut print features a checkerboard pattern filled entirely with peonies, repeating bloom after bloom across the page. Each square holds a slightly different flower, creating a balance between structure and softness that I love in printmaking.

Every year when the weather starts to warm up, the peonies in my neighborhood begin to bloom all at once. It feels dramatic every time. It’s like a slow parade appearing in front yards and gardens overnight. For a few weeks, they become impossible to ignore… oversized, crowded with petals, almost theatrical in the way they take over a space. This print was inspired by that feeling, and by my growing habit of stopping to admire them whenever I pass by.

Unfortunately, I’ve learned that I’m much better at drawing peonies than growing them. Since I can’t seem to keep the real thing alive, carving and printing them has become my way of keeping them around.

Every detail of this piece was carved and printed by hand, giving the print natural variations and texture that make each one unique. The checkerboard layout adds a graphic, almost quilt-like feeling, while the flowers keep the piece organic and full of movement.
